BHEL aims at creating more power for research and development for the future of the nation. The company also spends a part of their annual profit, nearly 2.5%, on R&D projects. This initiative makes BHEL the biggest investor in the heavy industry sector in India. The main research hub of BHEL is the Corporate R&D Division established in Hyderabad. The company’s central team also works on improving their research groups across all company centers in India. The main goal of all this research is to improve the company’s existing products and create new, advanced technology. This work helps BHEL stay competitive in important areas like power generation, transportation, and renewable energy.

In reference to specific technologies, BHEL has created 14 special Centres of Excellence across India. The main centre in Hyderabad is completely focused on areas like computer simulations, robotics, and nanotechnology. Other important centre established in Bengaluru, where experts work on power electronics and control systems. One of its unit in Tiruchirappalli has centres for advanced manufacturing and clean coal technology research. Apart from the main centres in metropolitan cities, BHEL also runs five specialized institutes for deep research. These combines institutes dedicated to welding technology, ceramic materials, electric trains, and pollution control.
